I remember that you said the unit would involve coal. I am interested in the answers the students come up with. I think of the foggy days in London and the famous fog that Jack the Ripper used to slither off into after his dastardly deeds.
Good question - there is a lot to research there and several "sides" of the story. This should really get kids thinking and hunting for great information!
Wouldn't it be great to get both sides of the debate. Wonder if there's someone you could interview (Sandy's family) that could add another texture to the research. I remember being in China, especially Bejing, in 1988 and the breathing problems I had with all the coal in the air. That was even before automobiles when the streets were paved with bicycles. ~C
This question actually is somewhat related to a novel we'll read concurrently. The subtext to this question is "why should I care about coal???" and the wiseguy teacher answer to that is "If you live in Maine and breathe air (or eat tuna sandwiches), you need to know about coal."
